Business Council Profile:
By way of background, the Business Council was established in 1993 with the underlying objective being to heighten awareness of the business environment and market opportunities in Papua New Guinea.

Membership subscriptions are presently NZ$200 + GST per annum.

The members of the Business Council find that their business opportunities in Papua New Guinea can be, and are, enhanced in a number of ways, including:

• Reciprocal arrangements and association with the Papua New Guinea New Zealand Business Councils based in Port Moresby.

• Generous discounts on services in Papua New Guinea, such as accommodation, rental cars, etc.

• Regular newsletters and feedback from members following visits to Papua New Guinea, which assist in keeping the membership abreast of activities in Papua New Guinea, including political and trade matters.

• A developing network of trade and government contacts in Papua New Guinea.

• Provision of a single point of advocacy and a united body of opinion to Government on such matters as taxation, investment, customs, quarantine requirements etc.

• Representations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise on the focus of business development.

• Co-ordinating direct access to visiting influential political or business representatives.

• Providing the opportunity for networking and assistance between existing and new market participants on market issues and to enhance the competitiveness of New Zealand business.

• Liaison with the PNG High Commission, Her Excellency, Ms Lucy Bogari. Through the High Commissioner’s office we can get letters of introduction for business people seeking appointments with Government ministers and heads of departments.

The Business Council holds the view that a team approach is necessary to optimise the opportunities for New Zealand in Papua New Guinea and accordingly invite you to join us in the New Zealand Papua New Guinea Business Council promotion of New Zealand business in Papua New Guinea.

New Zealand Pacific Business Council

PURPOSE
The primary purpose of the NZPBC is to promote two-way trade between NZ and the Pacific Islands.

MISSION STATEMENT
To work with all those people and organizations that have a stake in achieving improved trade and economic outcomes for Pacific Island nations and New Zealand. Only by working together in a collective and cooperative manner, can small economies hope to flourish in a global economy, dominated by large economic and political power blocks, whose objectives may not match ours.

OBJECTIVES
• To promote relationships, goodwill and understanding between the business communities of New Zealand and Pacific Island countries.

• To maintain, support, promote and develop two-way trade, investment, technical and economic co-operation, and tourism, between New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

• To carry out objective and independent research studies on trade related matters.

• To arrange for regular and effective consultation between business enterprises in New Zealand, and business enterprises and associations in the Pacific.

• To encourage and sponsor education, personnel exchange and work-place training schemes, at private sector level, between New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, to lift skill levels.

• To maintain liaison with the governments of both New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, in order to promote any of the above objects.

• To engage and co-operate with any appropriate responsible body established in the Pacific Islands or New Zealand, in order to promote any of the above objects.

• To provide a forum for contacts, and discussions on questions of common interest and information, plus provide advice and services to business.

• To seek to build a relationship which understands the national heritage and aspirations of each country, and which will draw together regional neighbours and trading partners, in order to build mutually beneficial trade and political alliances.

• To develop strong information and communications programmes that will keep businesses, relevant government departments, and politicians informed, so that best trade and related outcomes can be achieved.

GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE
This involves the 26 countries of Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia – American Samoa, Cook Islands, Commonwealth of Northern Marianas, Easter Island (Rapanui), Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Guam, Hawaii, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Norfolk Island, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Pitcairn Island, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna.
