An essential component of importing to New Zealand is complying with Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry import standards. The very informative NZ MAF website includes:

Profile - an overview of the mission, role and resources of the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry

Standards - a collection of MAF standards for the import and export of animals meat, seafood, plants, game, poultry and their products

Information - a broad ranging rural and seafood information resource including MAF publications

Perhaps the most important and widely relevant standard for Pacific Island exporters is the Plants and Plant Products Standard:

“These include phytosanitary standards for the import and export of plants and plant products, and operational standards for export certification, border control, surveillance and exotic disease and pest response. Plant Import Health Standards are statements approved under Section 22 (1) of the Biosecurity Act 1993 by the Chief Plants Officer, MAF, defining the conditions that must, if an import is to be made, be met in the country of origin of export, during transit, during importation and quarantine and after introduction.”

The General Procedure for the importation of plants and plant products into NZ contains import health standards for:
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Seeds for processing
  • Seeds for sowing
  • Nursery stock
  • Micro-organisms/microbiologicals/lab specimens
  • Cut flowers and foliage
