FishSAFE

To improve safety in the commercial fishing industry.

Fishermen have contributed to new safety guidelines aimed at reducing the high number of injuries in the commercial catch sector and the social and economic cost they have on individuals, families and the industry.

Fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in NZ, with high levels of injuries and fatalities, on a similar scale to forestry and aerial dressing.

These guidelines, which can be viewed at www.fishsafe.org.nz cover the spectrum of health and safety issues and are based on the experience and input of fishermen from around NZ.

The Seafood Industry Training Organisation is developing one-day training workshops to help skippers and owners of vessels under 24 meters put the new health and safety guidelines into practice and give them the tools to train their crews. They will start in April 2006 and be rolled out over the next two years at ports around NZ.
