Background Information
The Federated States of Micronesia are the four states of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae.

The FSM became fully self-governing in 1986 and was admitted to the United Nations in 1991. The FSM is headed by a president and comprises a 14 member National Congress. Each of the states elects its own legislature and governor.

The National Constitution defines the federal responsibilities which include immigration, taxes, duties and tariffs, regulation of currency, foreign and domestic trade, banking, navigation and shipping, insurance, telecommunications and the development of national resources.

Primary production is directed mainly at subsistence farming witht he coconut tree Kava and Betel nut as vital elements of the islanders' existence. In recent years there has been an increase in commercial fishing with the National Fisheries Corporation examining the potential for further development of international fishing rights.

There is little manufacturing industry, although there is potential for development of handicraft which is of a high quality. Similarly, tourism is largely undeveloped.
